Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service
January 19, 2009
In 1994 Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act, designating the King Holiday
as a national day of volunteer service. Instead of a day off from work or school,
Congress asked Americans of all backgrounds and ages to celebrate Dr. King's legacy
by turning community concerns into citizen action. The New York State Commission
requests that all national service and other volunteer programs in the state celebrate
the King Holiday by having “a day on”, rather than a day off. More information is
forthcoming about opportunities to collaborate with other organizations in your
community.

Organization: SCA Hudson Valley AmeriCorps
Phone: 845-255-4758
Email: tsnell@thesca.org
Event Description: Volunteers Needed to: The 10 acres that were sprayed last
year are dead and need to be flattened in order to survey for any new growth. Any
new Phragmites stalks will be individually sprayed with herbicide again this coming
fall, and hopefully most of the new growth will be cattail. To flatten these giant
stalks we need man (and woman) power; a group of 15 volunteers were able to smash
down roughly 2 acres a couple weeks ago. Two main methods used were 4ft. boards
with rope for handles (crop circle method) and two huge cable spools pushed by 3-4
people. The spools were very effective but require a lot of strength. By the end
of the day at our last flattening event everyone had their own method of flattening:
throwing things at it, laying down into it… however labor intensive, I was also
very fun. Be prepared to get a good workout of muscles you didn’t know you had and
see the work you accomplish when an acre of reed is flattened. We will provide hot
chocolate for breaks but volunteers will need to bring a sack lunch.

Event Description: Each spring and fall, Postal Letter Carriers across Upstate
NY collect food donations at the mailbox for area pantries. Our last effort in May
resulted in a much-needed infusion of more than 500,000 pounds of donated goods
to small pantries, soup kitchens and food banks. We are moving our Fall Food Drive
to correspond to the closing date of the President's 2009 "United We Serve" initiative
-- Friday, September 11. In New York State, we believe this date is a singular 'call
to action,' and offer this avenue to engage state residents in a large community
exercise with local results. We believe we can close the 2009 "United We Serve"
campaign with a strong turnout at the mailbox, which helps to raise awareness about
hunger in our own communities. The generous nature of our communities, in partnership
with our letter carriers and fellow postal employees who support this effort, has
given our Postal Letter Carriers food drive a track record of great successs. A
single nonperishable food item left at the mailbox, hundreds of times over, continues
to deliver great benefit to our neighbors in need.
Skills Needed: No skills, just a generous spirit.

On call 24 hours a day for the past five years, a group of senior citizens has made
history by greeting nearly 900,000 American troops at a tiny airport in Bangor,
Maine. The Way We Get By is an intimate look at three of these greeters as they
confront the universal losses that come with aging and rediscover their reason for
living. Bill Knight, Jerry Mundy and Joan Gaudet find the strength to overcome their
personal battles and transform their lives through service. This inspirational and
surprising story shatters the stereotypes of today's senior citizens as the greeters
redefine the meaning of community. Watch the trailer online and check back for the

as the charity of choice for their annual "Light Up a Life" initiative. During the
busiest time of the year, we will greet thousands of JetBlue travelers as they come
through JFK's Terminal 5 and invite them to: 1) donate $5 for the chance to win
a FREE round-trip ticket anywhere JetBlue flies 2) donate $5 and decorate a patch
on a quilt which will be given as an inspirational gift to hospitalized children
at Jamaica Hospital 3) purchase a SoaringQuilt and SoaringPillow to share with their
family over the holidays 4) purchase a Soaringwords activity kit for $5 for children
to enjoy on their flights. In order to insure our success, we need the help of volunteers
who are energetic, creative and passionate about helping ill children. Volunteers
will encourage travelers to make donations and help them decorate the quilts. Dates:
December 18 to Dec. 24 Time: Morning Shift: 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. or Evening Shift:
4 pm to 8 pm Location: JFK JetBlue Terminal 5, Marketplace Please let us know as
soon as possible if you can help us by emailing soaringwords@aol.com or calling

will then email you the volunteer instructions and guidelines. We need to get all
volunteer names to JFK security. You will not be allowed to enter the Marketplace
without a photo ID. We hope you will be able to join us to help bring some comfort
and joy to kids during this holiday season. Please share this email with your friends
and family and sign up as a group to volunteer with Soaringwords. Soaringwords'
mission: Each year, over 22 million children suffer from chronic and serious illness
in the U.S. Soaringwords' misson is to lessen the impact of serious illness by connecting
ill children and their families to a community of compassionate and caring volunteers
who inspire them to "Never give up!" Soaringwords embraces these children and their
families by providing fun, creative and educational activities, both in person and
online, that cultivate joy, hope and laughter. Visit soaringwords.org to watch our
video. Many thanks, Lisa Buksbaum, Greta Rozensweig and the Soaringwords team.
