ServiceNation Summit

September 11 & 12, 2008

Sept. 11-12 in New York city, will bring together 500 leaders of all ages and from every sector of American life —from universities and foundations, to business and politics—to celebrate the power and potential of citizen service, and lay out a bold policy blueprint for addressing America’s greatest social challenges through expanded opportunities for volunteer and national service.

The Summit will begin with a presidential candidates' forum the evening of September 11, where Senators McCain and Obama have been invited to speak in depth about their views on the role of citizenship and service in post-9/11 America. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg will welcome the attendees when the proceedings continue the following day, and the summit will conclude with a keynote address by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who earlier this year became the first governor to create a cabinet post dedicated to service and volunteering. To provide detailed training and guidance on the oversight and administration of an AmeriCorps grant to Project and fiscal staff of all organizations that were awarded a 2008-09 AmeriCorps grant. Agenda topics will include: (1) important programmatic and fiscal information and updates you will need prior to the start of the program year, (2) Progress on the New York State AmeriCorps Evaluation, (3) an introduction and training on the new CMS Reporting System that will replace WBRS, (4) a financial overview of effective fiscal management systems, regulatory requirements, internal controls and policies and procedures, accounting systems, budget controls and financial reporting, matching and in-kind contribution, and documentation, and (5) other agenda determined a priority based on a needs assessment of programs, and priority issues of the Commission and/or Corporation.

Volunteer Administrators in the Binghamton area www.VASTsite.org will be hosting a 3 day conference Oct 1st to the 3rd at the Holiday Inn Arena with the theme of Power in Partnerships. This will be the 2nd national conference of the Association of Volunteer Resource Management www.AVRM.org. Specifics are in both of the above mentioned sites.

There will be over 30 speakers, speaking on a huge span of ideas from Hospice volunteering to using teen volunteers to support military families, a volunteer group out of Oneonta's college and community who have and continue to provide relief in the south in reaction to Katrina. A coalition, Aging Futures developed out of concern for the elderly will explain how the grant the group received under the auspices of the Office For Aging from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has spun off to have developed committees in the community working on Universal construction design for those wanting to grow old in their home, a committee on working with businesses and the city government on Livable Communities and committees on developing creative transportation and Mental Health solutions for our elders. The story will be told of volunteers and the central New York flood of 2006; Baby Boomers- what are they going to want and how to we get it for them; Corporate responsibility in supporting employee volunteering; how civic engagement can improve the community and the well being of the young and the old, etc.

Governor’s Summit on School Engagement and Dropout Prevention

On October 10, 2008 Governor Paterson in partnership with America’s Promise Alliance will convene a Governor’s Summit on School Engagement and Dropout Prevention at Nazareth College in Rochester, New York. Due to rising dropout rates it is now more important than ever to develop new and innovative ways to engage young people in their schools and communities. In light of this dropout crisis, the America’s Promise Alliance has identified five resources, or promises, that are most crucial to young people’s success; caring adults, safe places, a healthy start, effective education and opportunities to help others. We aim to mobilize leaders in education and youth development around these Five Promises to develop strategies for reducing dropout rates and more effectively engaging our young people.

AHRC Nassau is hosting their 2008 Walkathon on Sunday, November 2nd at Eisenhower Park (Field 6A) in East Meadow, New York. We are raising money to help enrich the lives of children and adults with developmental disabilities. We are looking for people in the community willing to volunteer their time by obtaining sponsors and walking the day of the event. We already have volunteers recruited to facilitate the operational end of the event. Registration begins at 10am and the walk kickoff beings promptly at 11am. If you are interested in obtaining a Sponsorship Envelope by mail, please preregister by calling 516-626-1000 and asking for the Community Resources Dept. We are giving out three-hour community service credit coupons the day of the event to those students who pre-register to walk and have obtained sponsors. The Z-100 party patrol will be on hand that day to entertain everyone with their music and giveaways. This two-day event features live entertainment by local youth dance and music groups; elegantly decorated, themed, holiday trees and beautifully displayed holiday table settings – all available for raffle. We also have a Holiday Boutique featuring gift items for an early start to holiday shopping. Appearances will be made by Ronald McDonald and the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes.

In order to make this fundraising event a success, we need volunteers for various tasks between Thursday, November 20, through Sunday, November 23.
